Description
As Jesus entered Jerusalem in a most peaceful nature, signified by his riding on a donkey rather than a horse, the people praised him with the word Hosanna, signifying their adoration of Him, their praise of Him as the Son of God, and their embrace of Him by the setting down of their cloaks and palm branches from the nearby trees for his path while also waving palms, a recognized symbol of goodness and justice. As the custom at the time was also to wave palms to denote victory to kings, even more so were palms waved with immeasurable joy in welcoming and celebrating the King of Kings, The Much Loved and Awaited Messiah!
Although born to a prominent family, Saint Anthony of Padua's heart alight with faith, left all behind to follow Jesus in imitation of His genuine love and respect for the poor and the vulnerable. It was in being volunteered to give a sermon that his pure and truthful heart lit up his words into fire like bright sunshine filtering through a palm, revealing the knowledge and the passion for which he was followed forever after, first as an Augustine and then as a Franciscan of the peaceful spirit of the Lord. There is no doubt all his life, even if at another time and another place, Saint Anthony waved an imaginary palm at every cherished adoration of his Jesus.
"Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord". Verse 38
